The Texas Senate has overwhelmingly passed a measure aimed at tightening the state’s rules on when online businesses must collect sales tax.

Senators voted 30-1 today to pass House Bill 2403, a measure that originated with Rep. John Otto, R-Dayton. The bill was sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas.

Voters in the Eanes school district approved a $54 million bond package, just months after sinking a referendum for triple that amount.

The bond, which passed with 62.9 percent of the vote, will pay for replacement buses; energy-efficiency and heating and air-conditioning projects; technology upgrades; and improvements needed to comply with the American With Disabilities Act, among other things. Unlike November’s $150 million package, this one had no organized opposition. The bond would increase the overall property tax rate by 1 cent to $1.2125 per $100 assessed valuation.
