Stanford University Free e-learning Online Degree Attracts Thousands

Stanford University’s free introductory distance learning online degree in artificial intelligence has attracted thousands of people barely a month after it was announced.

The course begins in September and represents the world’s first completely free, open-access university-level course utilising the virtual learning environment of the internet and has already attracted 58,000 learners, the New York Times reports.

Such is the popularity of the experimental online learning project that the establishment announced a further two earlier this week (August 16th) from its computer science department.

“The vision is: change the world by bringing education to places that can’t be reached today,” said Dr Sebastian Thrun, one of the world’s most prolific and respected artificial intelligence experts and a course instructors.

“Through the web’s capabilities, we are extending the reach of existing education,” he told the Daily Telegraph.

Stanford University’s first class will begin on October 10th.

    • Unlike Stanford University public University of California Berkeley discourages resident student admissions. UC Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau ($450,000), Provost Breslauer ($306,000) pick the pockets of resident students and their parents clean. Birgeneau’s, Provost’s tuition increases make public Cal. the # 1 ranked most expensive for resident students (during the greatest recession of modern times). Cal. is more expensive than Harvard College. Birgeneau’s, Breslauer’s outrageous 14% annual tuition increases (2006 – 20012) provide a shocking picture of out of touch, self-serving senior management.

Robert J Birgeneau and Provost have forgotten they are public servants, stewards of the public money, not overseers of their own fiefdom. Pay ex-politician $300,000 for several lectures; Recruit affluent foreign & affluent out of state students who then displace qualified instate applicants; Spend millions (prominent East Coast university accomplishing same at 0 cost) for OE consultants to remove Chancellor, Provost created inefficiencies but prevent consultants from examining senior management.

Sack clueless Provost George Breslauer. Wasteful Chancellor Birgeneau resigned.

Email opinion marsha.kelman@ucop.edu Calif. State Senators Assembly Members (The author has 35 years’ consulting, has taught at Cal. where he observed the culture & ways of senior management & was not fired)

    • University of California Berkeley Provost Breslauer Chancellor Birgeneau raise instate tuition at public Cal. till Cal. is the most expensive public university in our country. I love University of California having been a student & lecturer. Like so many I am disappointed by Provost George Breslauer’s ($306,000 salary) and Chancellor Birgeneau’s ($450,000 salary) failure to arrest escalating costs/tuition. Birgeneau/Breslauer doubled instate tuition. On an all-in cost UC Berkeley (UCB) is the most expensive public university; more expensive than Harvard, Yale. The tuition increases have forced students to take on more debt to finance their education. In 2010, two-thirds of college seniors graduated with loans, and those loans averaged $25,250
UC Berkeley ranked # 2 in faculty earning potential. Paying more is not a better university. Birgeneau/Breslauer dismissed: increasing the number of classes per faculty; eliminating courses with too few students; refraining from exorbitant salaries, bonuses; doubling the time between sabbaticals; freezing all vacant positions; freezing pay, benefits & reforming pensions, health costs. Birgeneau believes fiscal efficiency is not healthy for Cal. Exodus of faculty, chancellors, and administrators: who can afford them?
An American Enterprise Institute study found that UCB can operate well on much leaner budgets. Californians agree it is far from the ideal situation.
More recently, Chancellor Birgeneau’s and Provost George Breslauer’s campus police rammed baton jabs on Cal. students protesting the doubling of tuition/fees. Clean sweep: Birgeneau resigned; fire Breslauer. Email your opinion to UC Board of Regents marsha.kelman@ucop.edu

Student loan debt hijack’s university students. Like so many I am deeply disappointed by the pervasive failures of Regent Chairwoman Lansing, President Yudof, Chancellor Birgeneau from holding the line on rising costs & tuition increases. Paying more is not a better education.
Californians are reeling from 19% unemployment (includes: those forced to work part time; those no longer searching), mortgage defaults, loss of unemployment benefits. And those who still have jobs are working longer for less. Faculty wages must reflect California’s ability to pay, not what others are paid.
Current pay increases for generously paid University of California Faculty is arrogance. Instate tuition consumes 14% of Ca. Median Family Income!
Paying more is not a better education. UC Berkeley(# 70 Forbes) tuition increases exceed the national average rate of increases. Chancellor Birgeneau has molded Cal. into the most expensive public university.
UC President Yudof, Cal. Chancellor Birgeneau($450,000 salary) dismissed many much needed cost-cutting options. They did not consider freezing vacant faculty positions, increasing class size, requiring faculty to teach more classes, doubling the time between sabbaticals, cutting & freezing pay & benefits for chancellors & reforming pensions & the health benefits.
They said such faculty reforms “would not be healthy for UC”. Exodus of faculty, administrators? Who can afford them and where would they go?
We agree it is far from the ideal situation, but it is in the best interests of the university system & the state to stop cost increases. UC cannot expect to do business as usual: raising tuition; granting pay raises & huge bonuses during a weak economy that has sapped state revenues & individual Californians’ income.
There is no question the necessary realignments with economic reality are painful. Regent Chairwoman Lansing can bridge the public trust gap with reassurances that salaries & costs reflect California’s economic reality. The sky above UC will not fall
